Transitions

transitionsIt seems as if everything is in a transition state to me. The global economy is transitioning. My local economy is transitioning. Even my personal life is in transition. My clients are in transition from different worlds, the worlds of recovery, homelessness, prison and abuse to name a few.

As a career coach, it’s my job to help others transition from the world of unemployment into employment. For many it’s a tough one. They come to me seeking stability, hope, a sense of peace and calm that everything will be okay. There may be days I feel anything but okay, stable and calm. I still must exude an air of calm—cool—collected!

I find it helpful to take a few minutes each day and remember:

  • It’s not about me!
  • It’s their life—their choice!
  • I am a guide and an option giver!
  • It’s more about building relationships than job skills!
  • Treat them as I would want myself or a family member to be treated!
  • Beneath all the bravado and noise is a wounded soul!
  • Everyone has been given a basket full of skills and strengths that far outweigh their weaknesses!
  • Everybody deserves a chance to succeed!

Out of transition and tough times often comes a stronger person. I play a small role on the transition team, if they let me. In many respects I have to prove I can be their rock in the transition. If I can prove it once, they’ll be back. I want them to come back when times are good AND when times are tough. That’s when the real progress can begin.

What do you do to stay calm and cool?
